One of Rio's most traditional areas, Botafogo neighbours Flamengo and Downtown to the north, and Copacabana and Ipanema down south. The neighborhood was named after João Pereira de Souza Botafogo, one of the first residents in the area. Botafogo is a middle to high class neighbourhood of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It's specially known for hosting two of the biggest shopping centers of Rio. RioSul, one of Rio's major shopping malls is here, right across from Rio Shopping with a number of outlets and discount stores. Keep a note in your agenda for a rainy day in Rio. It's also well known due to the educational, medical, and buissness institutions that are at the area. Botafogo is an urban beach located at the shores of the Guanabara Bay. The Botafogo Beach, Rio de Janeiro, receives the contstant visit of yachts and sailboats. Keep in mind that one of Rio de Janeiro's finest yacht clubs is located at Urca, right beside Botafogo Beach. Botafogo Beach is one of Rio's favorite places for outdoor shows.

The attractions at Botafogo are: Villa Lobos Museum, Rui Barbosa's House and the Museum of the Indian. The Villa Lobos Museum is set at a mansion built during the end of the XIX century, having it's gardens planned by the guru of garden designs Burle Marx.
