CARNIVAL RIO DE JANIERO 2010:
Carnival at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a huge celebration that can be lived and enjoyed in various ways, and many places.
Rio de Janeiro´s Carnival main event, is the "ESCOLAS DE SAMBA PARADE" (SAMBA SCHOOLS PARADE), at Sambodromo, (Sambodrome).

"However", the Samba Schools Parading does not by any chance account for all the Carnival activities and fun, in Rio de Janeiro.
The "marveous city of Rio de Janeiro" offers a wide array of Carnival possibilities, "before, during, and even after the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro".
CARNIVAL ACTIVITIES OF RIO DE JANEIRO: Carnival rehearsals at Sambodromo, Street Carnival parties, parades, and Carnival Balls.
The main caracteristic of these "other attractions of Rio de Janeiro´s Carnival" is that the visitor actually takes part of the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro festivities; unlike Carnival at Sambodromo, where the assistant is just a "deluxe espectator".
CARNIVAL OF RIO DE JANEIRO 2010 ATTRACTIONS:
STREET CARNIVAL - RIO DE JANEIRO 2010:
(FREE) STREET CARNIVAL - STREET PARTIES: Street parties occur at different spots of the city of Rio de Janeiro, before, during, and even after the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro.
The main Street parties of Rio de Janeiro´s Carnival, are the ones that take place in the surroundings of the Sambodromo during Carnival time; and the parties that are organized at Cinelandia Square. But the visitor at Rio de Janeiro will certainly find organized and spontaneous parties going on in any area of Rio de Janeiro. Just walk around the city and join the Carnival party.
(FREE) STREET CARNIVAL - CARNIVAL BANDS: The Carnival Bands (in portuguese Bandas de Rua), are music bands, that parade along a set itinerary through the streets of Rio de Janeiro, playing famous carnival rythms.
Rio de Janeiro´s Carnival has more than 300 houndred of these "Carnival Musical Street Bands", that parade along the city, and that can summon up a crowd of up to 200.000 thousand people.
The "Carnival Street Bands Parade" usually takes up 3 to 6 hours (warm up, parading, chill out).
The "visitor" at Rio de Janeiro can "freely" join the fun and take part of the Street Bands Carnival Parades through the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The Street Bands Carnival Parades can start any time during the day (including morning), but they usually don´t start late at night.
Some of the most important "Carnival Street Bands of Rio de Janeiro" are:
- Cordão do Bola Preta Band - One of the most traditional bands of Rio de Janeiro. Parades downtown and gathers quite a crowd.
- Banda de Ipanema Band- Parades in 3 different days along the streets of Ipanema. Banda de Ipanema is the Gay Friendly street Carnival Band, ando also summons up many followers.
- Suvaco do Cristo Band - Parades at the base of the Corcovado Mountain where, the Christ Redeemer Statue is located, at the Botanical Garden Area. .
- Carmelitas - Parades through the slopes of Santa Teresa neighbourhood.
(FREE) STREET CARNIVAL BLOCKS (BLOCOS): The "Street Carnival Blocks of Rio de Janeiro" (in portuguese Blocos de Carnaval de Rua), are very similar to the "Street Carnival Bands", except for two differences: They play their own original music made specially for the Carnival, and are often smaller in size and crowd.
The "Street Carnival Blocos" are in most cases, neighbourhood Music Bands of Carnival lovers, that start their own Carnival Music Band, and compose their original themes for every Carnival Parade.
As in the case of the Street Carnival Bands, the Street Carnival Blocks parade along a set itenerary, any time during the day.
ESCOLAS DE SAMBA (SCHOOLS) OF RIO DE JANEIRO EVENTS:
(FREE) TECHNICAL REHEARSALS OF THE ESCOLAS THE SAMBA AT SAMBODROMO: Starting in december, and up to the beginning of the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, it´s possible to assist the technical rehearsals of the Escolas de Samba at the Sambodromo of Rio de Janeiro.
You must check out the local programs to verify the rehearsals schedule, but they usually are programmed for every friday, saturday, and sunday, starting december and ending at the beginning of Carnival (Carnival of Rio de Janeiro 2010: 12 to the 16th of february 2010).
The "Technical Rehearsals of the Escolas de Samba", in english, "Samba Schools", consists of the actual rehearsals that the Samba Schools get at the Sambodromo of Rio de Janeiro, preparing for the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro 2010, Main Event Competition: "The Escolas de Samba of Rio de Janeiro oficial Parade".
The Technical Rehearsals of the Samba Schools at Sambodromo is a "full out sound and light rehearsal while actually parading at Sambodromo".
These Technical Rehearsals of the Escolas de Samba of Rio de Janeiro gives the assistant a pretty good idea of what the Carnival at Sambodromo is about. The Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro actually parade just like they would do at Carnival time at Sambodromo, except that the parade is done without costumes or the alegoric cars.
(5 to 35 reais - At entrance) TECHNICAL REHEARSALS AND PARTIES OF THE SAMBA SCHOOLS, AT THEIR QUADRAS: The Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro, also practice and give their comunities amazing shows and parties at their own "quadras". The quadras of the Escolas de Samba of Rio de Janeiro are the Samba Schools own "headquarters".
At their quadras, the Escolas of Samba (Samba Schools), of Rio de Janeiro "master the rythm of their Bateria", while in the mean time, throwing amazing parties.
At these party-rehearsals thrown by the Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro, there is no parading. It really works just like a night party, disco or nightclub. These parties are held thursday to saturday at night time at the quadras of each of the Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro.
(30 to 150 reais - at entrance - except Copacabana Palace) CARNIVAL BALLS OF RIO DE JANEIRO: During Carnival time there is a great variety of Carnival Balls to atend to. The 3 most famous Carnival Balls are: The Carnival Ball at Copacabana Palace, the Carnival Ball at Hotel Gloria, and the Carnival Balls that are held at Rio Scala. But there are a wide variet of other Carnival Balls to atend to. The Carnival Balls of Rio de Janeiro are held during the night.
(5 to 20 reais) SAMBA LAND - TERREIRÃO DO SAMBA: In any of these given days of february: 5, 6, 12 to 16, 19, and 20, it is possible to assist the SAMBA LAND, (in portuguese TERREIRÃO DO SAMBA).
The Samba Land of Rio de Janeiro is a huge "open air square" that opens from 7 pm to 5 am. At the Samba Land of Rio de Janeiro, the visitor will be able to apreciate during Carnival time, a great variety of live music and shows.
FRIDAYS AT LAPA: Lapa is a neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro well known for the great open air gatherings and parties that are held every friday night of the year, that include llive music, great bars, venues and discotheques.
At Carnival time in Rio de Janeiro, Lapa tunes in to the Carnival Spirit, and gives the visitors the chance to have a great night out, with a unique and massive Carnival feeling.
