Flamengo is the name of a beach, a neighourhood, and a park.
From all of these spots, the visitor has one of the prettiest views of the "Guanabara Bay" and the "Sugar Loaf".
The origin of the name "flamengo" is controverted. There are diverse theories about it's origin. The most charming one says that this area was, some time ago, frequented by "flamingo" birds.
Flamengo is a middle class to upper class residencial neighbourhood, with some luxury apartments.
The Flamengo Beach is the first beach on the coast of the Guanabara Bay, followed by Botafogo beach.
Right beside the Flamengo Beach there is a cycling and rollerbladinglane lane, and tenis, football and basquetball courts.
The heart of the neighborhood is the Flamengo Reclaim, officially called "Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes", and commonly called "Aterro de Flamengo"; a huge green park, designed by Brazilian garden guru Burle Marx.
The Flamengo Green Park counts with more than 11,000 trees divided in aproximately 1,000 species, over an area of 1,200,000 square meters. Most of the flora is native, and specially selected by Burle Marx.
It's located righ beside Flamengo Beach.
Inside the Flamengo Park you will find the "Modern Art Museum" (MAM), and the "Carmen Miranda Museum".
We also find there, the "Marina da Gloria", and the "Monumento a Estacio de Sá", founder of Rio de Janeiro.
The Flamengo Park also counts with an events center called "Rio Show", cinema's and a theatre.
