Ipanema is the fashionable and trendy beach of Rio de Janeiro.
It's also a neighbourhood of the Southern zone of the city, neighbouring Copacabana, Leblon and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon.
Ipanema beach, Rio de Janeiro, shares it's coast line with "Arpoador beach" (at the beginning) and with "Leblon Beach" (at the end).
The area of what is Ipanema today belonged to José Antonio Moreira Filho, the Barão de Ipanema.
Ipanema means "bad water" in Indian dialect, but since the name derived from the baron, it has nothing to do with the clear blue sea and white sands of this beach.
