Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, mostly known as "Lagoa", is a lagoon and a neighbourhood in the Zona Sul (South Zone) of Rio de Janeiro, surrounded by Ipanema, Leblon, Gavea, Jardim Botanico, Jockey Club, Copacabana and Botafogo.
The Lagoon attracts quite a number of visitors all year around and specially during the Christmas holidays due to its famous and gigantic Christmas Tree, which is built over a floating platform that moves around the lagoon.
The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon is a water mirror of 2,2km², with an avergage depths of 2,8m, and a perimeter of 7,8km, amounting to a volume of water of aproximately 6.200.000m³.
The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon is linked to the Atlantic Ocean through the Jardim de Alah Channel. This channel is 800m long and about 10 to 18 metres wide.
In it's 7,5 km perimeter you will find an asphalted lane for jogging, running and byking. The lanes are surrounded by trees and beatyfull scenerey. Through it's perimeter you will find several sport courts and green parks. All of this makes Lagoa a usuall and popular spot for athletes.
The Lagoa is also a center for remo (rowing), and several clubs have rowing facilities on the Lagoa, including Botafogo, Flamengo, and Vasco da Gama.
Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas concentrates a number of country clubs, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, gyms, the Jockey Club, and the headquarters of soccer team Flamengo.
Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon was recently refurbished and new open parks were created. Visit Parque dos Patins Park and Parque Cantagalo Park: Free sports courts, bicycle and jogger's lanes, a number of playgrounds for children, and gourmet food kiosks complete the pretty picture. Jogging, cycling, horseback riding, roller-skating, volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, nautical sports, the possibilities are virtually endless.
The Lagoa area is the biggest outdoor gastronomic area in Latin América, disributed in an area of 204.000 m2.
At nigh the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas transforms itself, the several quiosks gather groups of friends and couples with live jazz and mpb. The city lights reflecting of the water gives the Lagoon a distinct romantic feeling.
